Checking Myself Out

Carol in London Next to the Big Wheel

I was standing in front of the full-length mirror checking myself out. Do I look fat I wondered? Then I began laughing. It seemed absurd: a seventy-year old woman worrying about whether she looked fat! I thought about my mother: At 87 she was complaining to me about not having bought any new summer clothes, and what "people" would think.

Two days ago I had a squamous cell removed on my thigh. A picture was taken of my leg prior to the surgery. When I saw it I was thrilled, my plump leg looked fantastic long and slim. The surgery was definitely in second place to the photograph. So guess who stands next to me when I check myself out. The beauty of it is that I'm not crushed, and can either laugh or enjoy my vanity. Thanks Mom!
